The seven-day Lemosho route variation is preferred over the six-day option because it breaks up day two into two days, providing better acclimatization and a more gradual ascent. On the seven-day route, we walk from Forest Camp to Shira Camp 1 on day two, a reasonable altitude gain of 2,000 feet. Then on day three, we continue from Shira Camp 2 to the little-used Moir Hut, at 13,800 feet. Overall the exposure to this altitude will help prepare the body for higher altitudes coming in the following days
Start in: Arusha
End in: Arusha
Day 1: Arusha (1400M) – Lendorossi Gate (2100M) – Mti Mkubwa Camp (2750M)
Hiking time: 3 hours
Habitat: Montane forest
After eating breakfast at your hotel, your guide will brief you on the day. You will drive two hours from Arusha (1400m) to Londorossi Park Gate (2100m).
In the village near Londorossi Gate, you will receive a packed lunch and can buy mineral water for the hike. Then the final 45 minutes of the drive leading up to the gate will be on a bumpy forest track requiring 4WD vehicles.
At the entrance gate, the guides and porters distribute the supplies and register with the Tanzania National Parks Authority (TANAPA). You are now ready to begin your 3-hour hike into the rainforest. Be on the lookout for Colobus monkeys! Along the way, you will stop for an afternoon lunch break and arrive at Mti Mkubwa (“Big Tree”) Campsite (2750m) in the early evening.
The porters, who arrive at the campsite before the clients, will set up your tent and boil water for drinking and washing. The chef will prepare a snack and then dinner for the clients. At nighttime, mountain temperatures may drop to freezing so be prepared!
Hiking time: 6.5 hours
Habitat: Moorland
After early morning breakfast, you will begin your ascent out of the rainforest and into the heather moorland zone. You will cross many streams and walk over a plateau that leads to Shira 2 Camp (3840m).
At this campsite, you will be next to a stream and have a spectacular view of the Western Breach and its glaciers in the East. Similar to the first night, your tents will be set up prior to arriving at camp and the porters will prepare drinking and washing water for you.
You will enjoy evening snacks and then dinner prepared by our chef. Be prepared for a cold night as temperatures drop below freezing at this exposed camp.
Hiking time: 7 hours
Distance: Approximately 15 kilometers
Habitat: Semi desert
Following an early morning breakfast, you will leave the moorland environment and enter the semi desert and rocky landscape. After 5 hours of walking east, you will be come face to face with the Lava Tower (4630m).
Packed lunches are served at the Tower and hikers have the option of climbing the massive Lava Tower weather permitting. At this point of the hike, it is normal for hikers to start feeling the effects from the altitude including headaches and shortness of breath.
After lunch, you will descend from Lava Tower (4630m) to the Barranco Campsite (3950m). The 6800m descent gives hikers a huge advantage to allow their bodies to adjust to the conditions of high altitude.
The descent to camp takes around 2 hours to reach. It is located in a valley below the Breach and Great Barranco Wall (“Breakfast Wall”). Drinking and washing water and dinner will be served as hikers view the sun setting.
Hiking time: 4-5 hours
Distance: Approximately 5 kilometers
Habitat: Alpine desert
This is a short hiking day meant for acclimatization. After an early morning breakfast, it is now time to conquer the Great Barranco Wall! Although it may look intimating at first glance, hikers state that this Class 2 hike is usually much easier than they anticipated.
At the top of the Wall, you will have a view of Heim Glacier and will be above the clouds. The trail then winds up and down in the Karanga Valley. You will spend the night at Karanga Camp (3950m) and enjoy dinner and washing at the site.
Hiking time: 8 hours to reach Uhuru Peak, 7-8 hours to descend to Mweka
Distance: Approximately 7 kilometers ascent and 23 kilometers descent
Habitat: Stone scree and ice-capped summit
Your guide will wake you around 23:30 for tea and biscuits. You will then begin your summit attempt. The route heads northwest and you will ascend over stone scree.
During the ascent, many hikers feel that this is the most mentally and physically challenging part of the climb. In about 6 hours, you will reach Stella Point (5685m), located on the crater rim.
After enjoying the magnificent sunrise, you will continue ascending for about 2 hours on a snow-covered trail to Uhuru Peak (5895m). Reaching the summit of Mt. Kilimanjaro is a lifetime accomplishment! You will be able to spend a short time on the summit taking photographs and drinking tea before the descent to Barafu begins. The hike down to Barafu Camp takes about 3 hours.
At camp, you will rest and enjoy a hot lunch in the sun. After eating, you will continue descending down to Mweka Hut (3100m). The Mweka Trail will lead you through the scree and rocks to the moorland and eventually into the rain forest.
Mweka Camp (3100m) is located in the upper rain forest, so fog and rain should be expected. You will have dinner, wash, and rest soundly at camp.
Hiking time: 3 hours
Distance: Approximately 15 kilometers
Habitat: Forest
Following a well-deserved breakfast, your staff will have a big celebration full of dancing and singing. It is here on the mountain that you will present your tips to the guide, assistant guides, chef(s), and porters. After celebrating, you will descend for three hours back to Mweka Gate.
The National Park requires all hikers to sign their names to receive certificates of completion. Hikers who reached Stella Point (5685m) receive green certificates and hikers who reached Uhuru Peak (5895m) receive gold certificates.
After receiving certificates, hikers will descend into the Mweka village for 1 hour (3 kilometers). You will be served a hot lunch then you will drive back to Arusha for long overdue showers and more celebrations.

DavidGunn12020-02-24Excellent Safari My wife and I have been on 3 safaris and we were very happy with our experience organized by Serengeti Sons Safaris. The tour coordinator, Grace, and our driver, Simon, made every effort to meet our needs. We booked a custom 6 day safari and saw a huge variety of animals and birds. Simon was very knowledgeable about the wildlife and dealt with some very difficult, muddy driving to ensure that we had the best wildlife views possible. Simon also had a strong photographic sense which helped us find the best viewing locations. Accommodation was excellent and provided some interesting variety. We would strongly recommend Serengeti Sons as a responsive, price competitive safari provider.Verified
Mbakwe C2019-11-13The Serengeti Experience - A worthwhile Experience I have visited many parks like the Kruger Park in South Africa and the Akagera ParK in Rwanda, but the Serengeti Experience was out of this world. Among other attractions, I was able to see 4 of the 'Big Five' (the lion, the leopard, the buffalo and the elephant) in one game drive within two hours. Another major attractions was seeing the lions mating and stalking (in an ambush for) a prey. I am planning seriously to witness the migration in another visit to the Serengeti.Verified
Tina Binder2019-09-07A wonderful safari experience with Serengeti Sons We (2 persons) booked a 7 day Safari with Serengeti Sons quite to Tarangyre, Ngorongoro, Serengeti and Lake Manyara. They managed to organise a most wonderful trip, really tailored to what we liked: as much walking as possible and staying most closely to nature as possible. It was even greater than we had expected - nature, accomodation, organisation etc. Specials thanks to their flexibility since we booked with only about 10 days in advance!!! Highly recommended...Verified
Peter Smith2019-06-24Thanks Serengeti Sons for amazing trip. We are the foreign experts who live in Tanzania,We did our short safari of two days in Lake Manyara National Park and Ngorongoro Crater, since we started arranging our safari we thought it would be a very difficult to find the company that suit our demands, luck enough after we communicate with several tour companies we came across with Serengeti sons,Grace she was very kind and quick to answer our questions. She real knew what we wanted!thanks for that Grace you are amazing. Our driver guide Simon,he is knowledgeable, he real knows what do on safari you will never get tired of him,he showed us a lot of animamals with great explanation we recommend him to everybody who book with Serengeti sons. Lastly the Serengeti Sons team work is amazing and any believable, made our trip awesome. We real recommend Serengeti Sons as a great company to anybodyVerified
Alberto G2019-06-23Safari Probably one of the best trips I have ever taken. George our tour guide was amazing. Highly recommend him. If it wasn’t for him, I don’t think we would’ve had the same experience. George is like the unofficial president of Tanzania. He knew everyone there and he was always a phone call away from helping us find whatever animals we wanted to see. I highly recommend Serengeti Sons.Verified
Guy M2018-10-28Great experience Our safari tour with Serengeti Sons was a great experience. Before the actual trip, Grace proved very reactive and she really went to a great deal of trouble for us when we lost 3 our 4 pieces of our luggage on the plane. Jonas, our driver, was quite experienced and knowledgeable, and always keen on learning more about birds. We felt safe with him and he made it a point of honour to keep the car clean. He had a real knack to find animals : we will never forget how he managed to be in the best spot to introduce us to a magnificent leopard. The food was excellent. Thanks again for such a great experience.Verified
Dorothy M2018-03-07Book with Serengeti Sons Safaris From the moment we began communicating with Quintin his goal was to determine what kind of experience we were looking for. This is tough when it's your first time.He took the time to get to know us and then customized a Safari and Zanzibar beach vacation. We wanted a little of everything and were willing to scrimp on some things so that we could splurge on others. Quintin's extensive knowledge and expertise delivered a package we loved. Tarangire, Lake Manyara, Serengeti, Lake Victoria, Ngoronogoro and then off to Zanzibar to relax on the beach. Grace in the office couldn't have chosen a better guide for us, George, who met us at the airport with his big beautiful smile and was the perfect match. He was transformed from guide to FRIEND! We had a range of accommodation experiences, again to fit our budget, that delivered the basics and then others that went above and beyond, our favorite, that we truly didn't want to leave, was the Serengeti Acacia Central Camp. The staff were exceptional, the ambiance absolutely delightful and they deserve the tips. Our 5 star experience was Acacia Farm Lodge - fabulous! The thing about Safari is that you can never be guaranteed what you see but our guide, George, had eagle eyes at spotting animals. How he found that leopard in the tree still baffles us. George understands customer service and we are grateful to have been blessed to experience his hospitality. He kept his Land Cruiser exceptionally clean (we joked about how we had our daily massage with all the bumpy roads) he shared his wealth of knowledge about the animals and surrounding areas while quietly and enthusiastically fulfilling our every request. He's a good man! We chose to have a private experience rather than be in a group which worked wonderfully for us. We could stay longer where we wanted and move on at any time without sacrificing getting to know fellow travelers at the end of the day for dinner and socializing. We know of others that have flown around Africa to see a wider variety of parks but honestly the Serengeti region has it all, there is no need to go elsewhere. Our best animal experience - watching(and filming)a lioness hunt and take down a zebra which she then shared with her pack of 16. Oh by the way - if you're wondering whether the financial investment is worth it - it is the trip of a lifetime. Tip where warranted. Rest assured that OUR experience leaves us eager to recommend Serengeti Sons Safari. A company with integrity.Verified
Dru A2017-10-30Wonderful experience. Serengeti Sons were a terrific experience. My driver Simon was experienced and knowledgeable and had a good sense of humour. We logged a few miles together on some rough roads and survived and laughed through most of it! Our accommodations were excellent, once out of Arusha, and our tent camp experience will remain a highlight of my visit to Africa. I saw my first leopard and cheetah in the Serengeti which was an experience to remember! Overall Serengeti Sons took wonderful care of me and I felt like I was in good hands.Verified
