Day by Day Experience

Mt. Kilimanjaro

Day 1: Moshi – Umbwe Gate – Umbwe Camp

After breakfast, transfer from Moshi to Umbwe Gate (1,800m). Begin trekking through dense rainforest filled with towering trees, hanging vines, and the sounds of tropical birds. The trail is steep and ascends rapidly, giving you an immediate taste of the Umbwe challenge. After 5–6 hours of hiking, arrive at Umbwe Camp (2,940m), set in the forest. Dinner and overnight at Umbwe Camp.

Day 2: Umbwe Camp – Barranco Camp

Today the trail continues to climb steeply, soon leaving the forest behind and entering heath and moorland. As the vegetation thins, sweeping views open up across the valleys and ridges. The hike is demanding but rewarding, with a direct ascent to Barranco Camp (3,950m), located in a spectacular valley below the Barranco Wall.

Day 3: Barranco Camp – Karanga Camp

After breakfast, tackle the Great Barranco Wall, a thrilling scramble that offers breathtaking views from the top. Continue across undulating ridges and alpine desert before descending into the Karanga Valley. After a short but steep climb out of the valley, reach Karanga Camp (3,995m). This day is shorter, allowing for acclimatization and rest.

Day 4: Karanga Camp – Barafu Camp

The trail ascends steadily through alpine desert toward Barafu Camp (4,680m), your base for the summit attempt. Views of both Mawenzi and Kibo peaks are stunning along the way. Arrive at camp by mid-afternoon to rest, hydrate, and prepare for the night’s summit climb. Dinner is served early before heading to sleep.

Day 5: Summit Day – Barafu Camp – Uhuru Peak – Mweka Camp

At midnight, begin the final push to the summit. The steep ascent over scree leads to Stella Point (5,739m) on the crater rim, where a stunning sunrise awaits. Continue along the rim to Uhuru Peak (5,895m), the highest point in Africa. After celebrating your achievement, descend back to Barafu for rest and then continue down to Mweka Camp (3,080m) for overnight.

Day 6: Mweka Camp – Mweka Gate – Moshi

After breakfast, descend through the rainforest to Mweka Gate (1,640m), where the trek concludes. Enjoy a final walk under the forest canopy before meeting your vehicle for transfer back to Moshi. Arrive at your lodge for a hot shower, dinner, and a well-deserved rest after conquering Kilimanjaro via the Umbwe Route.
