Day by Day Experience

Day 1: Arusha – Londorossi Gate – Mti Mkubwa Camp

Depart from Arusha in the morning and drive to Londorossi Gate for registration and briefing. Begin your trek through lush rainforest, keeping an eye out for colobus monkeys and exotic birds. The trail is relatively short but steep, leading you to Mti Mkubwa Camp (Big Tree Camp) at 2,650m. Dinner and overnight at camp.

Day 2: Mti Mkubwa – Shira 1 Camp

Today’s trek takes you from the forest into moorland terrain with sweeping views of Shira Ridge. The path ascends steadily, passing giant heathers and volcanic landscapes, until reaching Shira 1 Camp at 3,500m. Relax, enjoy dinner, and prepare for the higher altitudes.

Day 3: Shira 1 – Shira 2 Camp

Continue your journey across the Shira Plateau, one of the most scenic sections of the trail. The trek is moderate, with stunning views of Kibo Peak and Mount Meru in the distance. Arrive at Shira 2 Camp (3,840m) for dinner and overnight stay.

Day 4: Shira 2 – Lava Tower – Barranco Camp

This is a key acclimatization day. Trek from Shira 2 through rocky alpine desert, ascending to Lava Tower (4,630m) for lunch. Afterwards, descend into the Barranco Valley, with views of the famous Barranco Wall. Arrive at Barranco Camp (3,950m) for dinner and rest.

Day 5: Barranco – Karanga Camp

After breakfast, tackle the exciting Barranco Wall, a steep but non-technical climb offering panoramic views. Continue trekking through alpine desert and ridges to Karanga Camp (4,035m). This shorter day helps with acclimatization before the summit attempt.

Day 6: Karanga – Barafu Camp

Ascend steadily towards Barafu Camp (4,640m), the high camp before the summit push. The landscape is stark and icy, with thrilling views of the peaks Mawenzi and Kibo. Rest early, as you’ll begin your summit attempt around midnight. Dinner and overnight at camp.

Day 7: Barafu – Uhuru Peak – Mweka Camp

Begin your summit attempt in the early hours, trekking through steep switchbacks towards Stella Point (5,739m). Continue along the crater rim to reach Uhuru Peak (5,895m)—the highest point in Africa. Celebrate your achievement before descending to Mweka Camp (3,110m) via Barafu. Dinner and overnight at camp.

Day 8: Mweka Camp – Mweka Gate – Arusha

After breakfast, descend through rainforest to Mweka Gate (1,640m) where you’ll receive your summit certificates. Meet your driver and return to Arusha for a well-deserved rest.
